The divine strength
behind the books

Karen Lawson, a lifelong advocate for equality and justice, has dedicated her life to making the world a better place. From a young age, Karen was inspired by the book Black Like Me, which opened her eyes to the harsh realities of racism and discrimination. She challenged her own attitudes and beliefs, engaging in meaningful conversations with her parents and standing up against prejudice wherever she encountered it.
Growing up in the 1960s, Karen witnessed the civil rights movement firsthand and saw the impact it had on her community. She attended a high school where integration was enforced by police, a reminder of the persistent racial tension that still plagues our society today. Throughout these formative years, Karen held onto her dream of becoming a writer, determined to share her experiences and perspectives with the world.
As an adult, Karen pursued her academic passions, earning a degree from Salem College and a Master’s in Education from Wake Forest University. Her studies focused on helping women and families cope with addiction, and she became a Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselor and Certified Clinical Supervisor. For 32 years, she worked in addiction treatment centers, supporting clients and their families as they navigated the challenges of recovery. She has personal experience with addiction in her own family, giving her a unique perspective on the struggles that so many families face.

Today, Karen is retired and lives with her two grandsons and three beloved dogs in the foothills of North Carolina. She spends her days gardening and knitting baby sweaters, but her passion for equality and justice remains as strong as ever. Karen’s life is a testament to the power of standing up for what you believe in and fighting for a better future for all
